CNG Cylinder: A high-pressure tank for storage of gas is installed, typically in the trunk. Depending on the type of CNG kit, the tank can also be installed under the vehicle as a alongside the original fuel tank (for bi-fuels) or as replacement
Fuel Lines and Components: High-pressure lines are routed from the CNG cylinder to the engine, along with a pressure regulator to reduce the gas pressure to a usable level for the engine.
Shut-off Valves: Safety features include shut-off valves to control the flow of CNG and a pressure relief valve in the cylinder.
ECU Modification and Calibration: The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) needs to be reprogrammed or replaced with a dedicated CNG ECU to manage the fuel delivery and engine performance when running on CNG, ensuring proper air-fuel mixture and ignition timing.
Change-over Switch: A switch is installed in the cabin to allow the driver to select between running on CNG or the original fuel (petrol or diesel).
Engine Tuning (Optional but Recommended): For optimal performance, engine tuning may be required to adjust parameters like air-fuel ratio and ignition timing specifically for CNG combustion.
Spark Plugs: While not always replaced, using spark plugs with higher ignition strength is often recommended for CNG vehicles due to the nature of CNG combustion.
Air Filter and Throttle Body: Regular cleaning of the air filter and throttle body is advised, and in some cases, specific CNG filters are installed
The initial costs incurred upfront depend on the type of vehicle and size of cylinder. However, due to the significantly lower running costs of CNG other fuels, the initial costs are easily recouped overtime.
CNG vehicle systems are generally considered safe due to the inherent properties of natural gas and multiple safety features integrated into the installation design.
Again, because CNG is lighter than air, it disperses quickly in the event of a collision, therefore reducing pooling risks compared to gasoline.
CNG uses a higher ignition temperature, making accidental combustion less likely
Proper (and timely) maintenance is crucial for ensuring safety.
A CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) system generally requires servicing at least once a year by a qualified technician.
However, specific components need to be checked (and maybe replaced) every 15,000km to 20,000km. These include filter replacement and spark plugs.
Today is the right time to convert to CNG. A combination of instant benefits such as improved safety, longer rides, increasing cost savings, environmental conservation and business expansion presents an enticing reason for vehicle owners to take the bold step in CNG usage as a preferred transport fuel.
